Bio
Gina Dominique (she/her) is a New York based painter and installation artist who in her work explores the histories of abstract painting and color theory in relationship to culture, gender and symbolism. She has a 2023 solo show scheduled at the School of Design Gallery at Stevenson University, Owings Mills, MD. Her work has been exhibited in more than one dozen other one-person shows, including at On The Walls Gallery at The Shala Union Square, New York City, at the University Art Museum, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, at Studio 23, Bay City, and at the University Art Center Gallery, Seattle Pacific University, Seattle. Additionally, to date she has participated in more than fifty group exhibits nation-wide.
Dominique's accolades include the Corcoran Gallery of Art's Alma Thomas Award for painting, a Lehman College Fellowship Award, a Seattle Metro Outstanding Public Achievement Award, a Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Grant, a Delta College Barstow-Frevel Scholarly Achievement Award, and a Central Michigan University Artist Award. She has also attended several artist residencies, including a 2022 artist residency at Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool, a 2021 residency Transart Institute for Creative Research, New York City, a 2019 residency 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica, a 1994 residency Tamarind Institute, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and a 1978 residency Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts, Lewisburg.
Gina Dominique is a tenured associate professor of art at City University of New York’s Lehman College, Bronx where she currently teaches painting, and where she previously served as the School of Arts and Humanities Associate Dean. She is pursuing a practice-based PhD at Liverpool John Moores University's Transart Institute for Creative Research. During the 2000s she was a tenured professor and art department lead at Delta College, University Center, MI. She earned an MFA at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque and a BFA from George Washington University's Corcoran School of Art, Washington, DC. She attended the first two years of her BFA at Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh. Gina Dominique (nee Shorto, m. Dominique Hersey) was born in Johnstown, PA.
