Discussion notes (researcher)
Robyn and I met for 90+ minutes to discuss my latest draft of the written thesis. I had emailed it to her earlier this week, stating that I am just over 40% of the way into it.
She was very encouraging, especially about my Chapter 4 Results/Discussion additions, noting that she found my approach to analyzing my own thesis paintings, each within the context of a specific art historically relevant work, to be very effective and interesting content.
Robyn implored me to devote more time and energy to this chapter in particular, and to continue with the autotheoretical/art historical/feminist method. She said that my writing about my personal experiences with various artworks, i.e. my citing and showing Barnett Newman's 'Vir Heroicus Sublimis' right along with my own painting, i.e. Populus Humilis et Divinus (People Humble and Divine) is very engaging. She also found that my discussions of my painting processes add to the writings' richness.
I felt relieved and pleased as the entire thesis, and especially Chapter 4, is, from my perspective right now, a very well organized mess. But I also feel as Robyn does about it, that the entire written project, especially Ch. 4 is finally starting to take shape...to come to life. YAY.
Robyn stated that my work on Chapters 1- Introduction & 3- Methods & Research Design has obviously been useful to me... first as scaffolding and then helped set me up to be productive in writing the overall thesis, and specifically in writing Chapter 4-Results/Discussion.
She also noted that upon completion, and prior to submission, I may need to remove some of the scaffolding (i.e., chapter sub-sections). Of course I agree, and stated that I had already done that once, but (re-)added Ch. 1's seven sub-sections right back because it (and all of the 'sub-sections') help me navigate the entire document.
I noted (maybe obviously) that I write like I paint, which is over all of the chapters (or canvases in a series) at the same time. I also stated that will write the conclusion last, and I meant to mention too that after completing Ch.4, I will also do a complete re-write of my Chapter 2- Lit Review, which is currently in an out-dated, and underdeveloped state.
We agreed that after I code my Artist Interviews, I will include some additional data in Ch.3, and select 2-3 to include as compare/contrast artists to 2-3 of my own paintings in Ch. 4-Results/Discussion.
Finally, I have just completed 'cleaning up' my bibliography, which is in better shape than it has ever been. I also added/started constructing my reference list.
