Sep 2024-Supervisory Meeting

Supervision meeting notes from 06 Sep 2024
Meeting Participants
Both Robyn Ferrell and I attended a Supervisory meeting on Thursday, 06 September 2024, from 6:00 -7:00 PM EST, via zoom. We met after Robyn's reading of the current draft of my dissertation. She made helpful and supportive comments, including:
~How productive the 2.5 months have been for me since we last met, which is when she read the last draft. She stated that the first three chapters read as though they are much more complete than they have been.
~Overall the dissertation is coming to life, and reads now as a cohesive memoir-like piece of writing, plus analysis. This comes through particularly in how I have included the five artist interviews. (I added quotes from in Chapter 2- Methodology & Research Design, plus excerpts from each in Chapter 3- Results.) They are working well in that they support the auto-theoretical premise.
~That the accompanying Artist Interview photos/images support and bring to life each interview.
~Re: Chapter 4, she commented that by the time you get to it now, the reader has been filled in on my process and thinking, and has a sense of my voice from having read the prior chapters, so that it is less dry now. This chapter needs the most work, but the earlier chapters had to be developed to this point to be able to complete it. She also noted the art historical images I've selected to compare my praxis painting to are strong, and make sense.
(This feedback from Robyn is especially encouraging to me, because for about 1.5 years after I conducted the 10 interviews, I did not want to include anything other than the 5 edited text transcripts as an Appendix. At this point, I am really pleased that I have been able to make constructive use of them. I am glad to have edited the transcript texts, to have researched the QDA programs I did, and to have "coded" them in MAXQDA. I am glad for Robyn's suggestion for me to think of them as a Greek chorus, which turned out to be a guiding principal for my being able to weave parts of each into at least two chapters of the thesis. They were so very much work, took so much time, and over quite a long period. Now though, I admit that they are a genuinely helpful (qualitative) method. And since Robyn said what she said, all of the Artist Interviews work finally feels like it was worth it.)
Supervisor discussion notes
Agreed action points (to be completed after the meeting)
Robyn asked me to ask Adam if he would email her names of outside reviewers...who he is thinking of asking to lead my Viva. If he needs, she has a suggestion, a curator in Sydney, so I will follow up and get names of outside reviewer/s to Robyn, and to Adam if he would like Robyn to make a recommendation. She has one who's curator in Sydney.
We will keep in touch via WhatsApp...in Sept, and to set up to meet in October.
We agreed that by November 1, I will devote most of the remaining word count... just under 9,000, to complete Chapter 4- Discussion & Analysis. And that will give me about 2,000 words to write Chapter 5- Conclusion, which I will also write.
And, we scheduled a November 7- 6PM EST...November 8- 8AM meeting in AUS.
