THE OPEN WINDOW SERIES (PUBLIC)
A TALK WITH TIA HALLIDAY- THE KINESTHETIC PICTORIAL
Stunning background/bio and beautiful, brilliant work. Connections between our creative motivations are remarkable…
-creating to communicate with our now deceased, personally and locally very influential fathers
-the history of modern painting...
-and specifically the history of abstract painting
-paint as skin
-color
LOST IS FOUND- DEFINING NEW POSITIONALITIES IN CREATIVE RESEARCH-
A WORKSHOP WITH TIA HALLIDAY- DAY 1
SENSORIAL EXPERIENCE 1- Dwelling Within
Tia: Pick a body part other than your hands, called a "new touch device”, to feel the given textures.
Me: Mine is my elbow...
Tia: Imagine that you are touching one part of the inside of your research
Me: It feels cool, wet and fluid
There is an end
It is paint that represents skin
This interior revealed the inside or underside of my skin…the part that connects to the musculature and the inside of my body...the underside of the hypodermis.

SENSORIAL EXPERIENCE 2
Tia: Using a new touch device,
Me: Mine is my heel...
Tia: Imagine engaging with an element of your practice that is the "outside" of your practice. Connect from the outside, and on a microlevel, go back and forth.
Me: I run my heal along the outside edges of my work.
I feel the textured canvas/linen of the painting’s substrate.

I feel the architecture of the frame beneath that.
The atmosphere of the environment feels like a cloud.
The form and appearance or print of the atmosphere is cool.
There are wounds that are healed, so they feel like scars.
I can stretch my body the length of my leg and still maintain contact.
And I continue to maintain that contact by hopping on my standing leg around the perimeter of the stretcher bars.

SENSORIAL EXPERIENCE 3
Tia: Connecting again with a new touch device..."
Me: Mine is the front of my abdomen...
Tia: Connect with your research...
Me: In a yogic upward dog position, my belling pressing on my research, I feel it in my gut.
What lies beyond is laying against and lifting up into the atmosphere.
It is humid and still.
It feels close.
I see a kind of formlessness, an abstracted, pre-cognitive state.
I am touching another state of being…a different dimension.
And, I am back in my studio, laying belly down on one of my canvases.

EXERCISE with GROUP OF 3
1. Select one to take notes and that person emails them to Tia post meeting.
2. Each group member talks about either one of the the homework exercises or one of the three we just completed.
3. Describe some of the architectures, feelings, textures, feelings, etc.
4. Make some connections between that and my praxis.
5. State what that meant for me.
6. Collectively come up with similar or like textures or like surfaces…with like scholarship or imagery…to what I came up with.
7. Move on to next person...then rejoin larger group.
I am in group/room 1 with Eve, Jake and Nancy…Jake takes notes and posts them here… we all add to them.

EXERCISE with WHOLE COHORT
Tia posted a Google “Jam” session with 4 categories, and we each posted 4 notes in one self-selected category. Note to self: I am the only one to post to #4, “MIXED BAG/MULTI ORIENTATION/NO FIXED ORIENTATION”…lol…that is like my praxis, my painting perspective, and my world view. Haha
LOST IS FOUND- DEFINING NEW POSITIONALITIES IN CREATIVE RESEARCH-
A WORKSHOP WITH TIA HALLIDAY- DAY 2
Tia first made calls for everyone to "radically reorient your practice", and to "be flexible".
Tia: Question 1- What is the experience, versus idea or subject, of being in the place of my research? (Do a visualization by first locating your “touch device)
Mine is the top of my head...
Me: Connecting with my astral self, which is without texture, but still it is complex.
It is as large as I am, and similarly shaped, and yet, it is formless.
The architecture of my astral self is connected to many other souls on the astral plane...we are linked together like pearls on a coiled pearl strand, or like bees in a coiled bee skep.
A juxtaposing form is structureless, formless, timeless, without shape or color. There is a timeless, spaceless atmosphere.
A new territory within my astral self is the connection to my physical body…it is close to my hair.
I am building a space that fully infuses my astral/spiritual body with my physical body. It encapsulates and becomes my fully formed psychic body. This is my personal interface between these two planes of existence.
Tia: Question 2- Did you ever find yourself in a space where you've lost my mo-jo, and what did you do to disorient yourself to get it going again?
Now, with the written notes on this visualization, brainstorm and map out how these new embodied spaces might enter and change, either subtly or radically or somewhere in between, my creative practice…or at least my current praxis.
Me:
Idea 1-
I do a performance inspired by yoga, meditation and pranayama practices, within an installation that includes color… through light (via a prism?), and/or paint.
Idea 2-
I do a series of performances where I paint myself with 7 different skin tones:
Whitish
Pinkish
Olive-y
Yellowish
Redish-brown
Brownish
Blackish
Idea 3-
I create various skin-toned paintings on thinner weight canvases, maybe in vertical striped patterns, then sew them into wearable are...like costumes or clothing...?
A WORKSHOP WITH TIA HALLIDAY- DAY 2
ONE-ON-ONE CRITIQUE WITH TIA HALLIDAY
Regarding my current praxis work, after a 15 minute discussion regarding photos of my two dozen or so paintings-in-progress and studio shots, plus a brief presentation of my working Dissertation subject… ”ChromaTheory: On Color, Abstract Painting & Otherness”… my main takeaway is her saying:
Tia: There is a population of paintings, a kind of global awareness…in the numbers of paintings and in their proximity to one another. Also in the color palette. In the completed body of work, pay attention to and maintain these aspects.
Chat comments from my cohort colleagues:
Tine Frich Moller to Everyone:
Gina, can I ask what you are working to achieve - or are you just going With the flow of Things atm?
