Nov 2022-Supervisory Meetings

DISCUSSION NOTES (researcher)
10 Nov 2022 Supervision Meeting
Lead supervisor Mark Roughley and I met for 90 or more minutes on Thursday, Nov. 10. 12:30 EST. We discussed:
~ the 10 artist interviews I conducted between Sept 1- Nov 1, 2022
~ my potentially using NVIVO to conduct data analysis of those interview transcripts (I may prefer to use a QDA that has video analysis capabilities...as this analyzes written transcripts only.)
~ if I do use NVIVO, Mark suggested I take a Doctoral academy training on it. If not, I will do a training with the Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) program I will use.
~ my current praxis, including looking at my five newest "Color Coded" paintings, which are, along with the other 27 in the series now posted on a digital gallery on my website.
~ my plan for a new six-panel, wrap-around mural-size installation piece, conceived as large-scale interactive Fitzpatrick "Skin Type I-VI" chart.
~ my scheduled July-Oct 2023 Stevenson University Art Gallery exhibition plans. I shared the floor plan/wall projections and discussed specific works installation possibilities.
~ the upcoming November Transart NYC residency that I will be attending
~ and as it concludes on Nov. 20, for the first time, I will meet Robyn Ferrell who will also be in NYC.
~ Mark and Robyn will meet in person for the first time tomorrow, Nov. 11
~ my confirmation of registration reports, which I have started to write/format based on LJMU PGR guidelines.
~ I shared my Google Docs link to it with Mark
~ Mark asked about and approved of my thesis chapter or essay titles, which are based on my intersectional methodological position.
~ we planned associated dates...Dec 1-30, for supervisory team input/edits, as well as a target Confirmation of Registration submission date of January 1, 2023
~ Mark agreed to reach out to possible LJMU viva voce faculty for a mid-January 2023 viva voce date
~ we agreed to invite my supervisors, schedules depending, to attend
~And I asked Mark about:
1. my ethics approval status, which does not yet read “approved” on my eDoc history...and what should I do, (I submitted required docs w/ ethics project approval number, etc.)
~~ Mark said the docs show along with the ethics approval project #, so not to worry.
2. my completed 10 artist interviews…specifically: how do I include them in the Confirmation of reg, as they are not yet analyzed…i.e. as full or short MP3 clips, as full or brief audio clips, and/or simply as full or sample written transcripts….? as an appendix, correct?
~~ Mark said that I will create one long PDF appendix containing the entire written transcript from each of the 10 interviews.
3. When I ought to share my draft Confirmation of Registration with him, Robyn and Borinquen?
~~ Mark said after I meet with Robyn on Nov. 20, and before he and I meet again on Dec. 15.
4. What was the skin color range of the other 8 homo-sapiens in our genus (or phylum)…did they roughly correlate with human skin tone ranges?
~~Mark will send me related skin tone charts
5. May I apply now for a July 2024 exhibition in an LJMU gallery, or to one in Liverpool…to hang at least a portion of my PhD praxis work, and give my public talk/presentation at?
~~Mark will put me in touch with some Liverpool galleries and LJMU faculty liaisons

______________________________

On Sunday, Nov. 20, 2022, Transart supervisor Robyn Ferrell and I met for nearly 2 hours at NOMO in NYC for a brunch meeting. During it we discussed my:
~ ColorCoded painting series (32 to date)
~ July-October 2023 scheduled exhibition at Stevenson University Greenspring Gallery, exhibition plans and larger scale piece/s
~ Upcoming confirmation of registration, including an abstract, four reports (lit review +++), references/bibliography, and appendices (the 10 artist interviews I conducted between Sept 1-Nov 1)
~ Reading in aesthetics, feminist aesthetics, and measuring the reading I do against my research questions. Anything not directly answering one or more, gets set aside for another project.
~ Revelation about my main creative motivation and interest being to make what I see as the best painting. And to do that I must use the best available materials...and using oil paints on linen vs acrylic on. Robyn discussed my making larger scale works...based on current art exhibitions in NYC that I saw in recent days, i.e., Alex Katz, Nick Cave, Meret Oppenheim, and Wolfgang Tillmans.
~ And Robyn discussed her trip from and back to London. There she will see exhibitions this coming week, i.e., Lucien Freud, and Homer Winslow, among others.
Supervisor discussion notes
Agreed action points (to be completed after the meeting)
~Follow-up with Mark regarding a potential supervisory meeting or Confirmation of Registration by Dec. 21.
