On Thursday, Sep 14, I’ll give informal presentations to two different classes, then at 5 PM, I'll do an artist talk, all on my PhD exhibition, "Skin Deep- On Abstract Painting & The Nature of Beauty", in the Theater Lobby "Cube" Art Gallery, Stevenson University’s Greenspring Campus, Stevenson, MD. The show's reception is Saturday, Sep 16, 1-4 PM.
"Dominique's current work is motivated by her research into the philosophy of art, feminist aesthetics, and auto-theory. Her palettes are influenced by the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale, used since the 1970s to determine SPF levels required to prevent sunburn, by a Pantone SkinTone Guide, by various beauty industry product promotional color charts, and by her own olive skin.
All but one of more than 40 paintings in the series, 18 included in the exhibition, are executed in a gesturally abstract style, which in several pieces reads like abstracted graffiti. And the show's central piece, "The Paintress & The Composer," 2023, Acrylic on linen, 54 × 120 inches, pictured front, like many others, lends itself to a figurative interpretation."
