TT Session 20- SLOW PRACTICES
PHD2 SEMINAR: SYNTHESISING, MAPPING & PLANNING RESEARCH - TOWARDS PROGRESS REVIEW WITH MICHAEL BOWDIDGE, ALLI GEREMIA & LISA OSBORN, 2nd year PhD’s heard from the three already minted PhDs about their thesis/dissertation research and writing processes. Individually they each articulated about how going through the PhD program, particularly writing for each stage of the thesis/dissertation opened them up to new ideas, writings, thoughts and parts of their practices.
In their own ways each also stated that this year, 2, helped them further focus and adjust their initial project… and the confirmation process specifically aided them in outlining and organizing their thesis writing for the upcoming 2 years. Lisa stated and reiterated over and over the importance of reading not just the historical writings on any given philosophy or theory, but equally important is to read the most current writing…from today’s living philosophers and theorists.
Michael stated that at this point it may seem like getting to completion will require padding, but the opposite is more likely true. That is, once we each get towards the end, instead the writing will likely need quite a bit of trimming or editing. Current PhD 2’s individually discussed what we accomplished during Year 1 of the PhD program. We each touched upon ups and downs…on our struggles and triumphs. The session overall was a good way to re-engage, as well as to begin the next phase of our reading, writing and praxis work.
