Mar 2023-Supervisory Meetings

March Supervisory meetings
Topic: Confirmation of Registration Reports revisions
Participants: PGR Gina Dominque Hersey, LJMU Lead Supervisor Mark Roughley, and TT Supervisor Borinquen Gallo
Meeting dates: 10 Mar 2023 & 31 Mar 2023
Location: MS Teams
Meeting format: Video conference
Meeting notes and files:
~Mar 10 meeting between Mark R., Borinquen G., and myself took place from 11AM-12:35PM EST.
~Mar 31 meeting between Mark R., Michael B., and myself took place from 10AM-11:30 AM EST.
We discussed my revised Confirmation of Registration reports. They indicated that the revised title is "On Abstract Painting, Color & Otherness" is good enough for now.
~In both meetings, supervisors requested I further clarify language of the Abstract, to revise it to include a focus on the project being practice-led...
I.e., "Abstract painting is now considered a “proto-feminist” art movement, the antithesis of the “heroic male” space it once occupied. "On Abstract Painting, Color & Otherness" is a practice-led  project consisting of abstract paintings, sculpture, a documented solo public art exhibition, accompanying talks, artist interviews, and analytical writing. The artworks are personally invested, commenting on relevant-to-21st century issues that seek to positively impact social, gender and racial/ethnic equities. By using color palettes that reflect my own othered position as an olive-complexioned, Italian American female, and by paying homage to its proto-feminist roots, the aim is to re-frame and expand the abstract painting genre."
~Mark and Borinquen recommended I delete the Abstract's middle paragraph, which I did immediately.
"Via the literature review and artist interviews, I examine how the philosophy of art, aesthetics, more specifically feminist aesthetics, and how color theory affects women artists, and especially female abstract painters are considered. And how can these arenas, aesthetics and abstract painting, be reframed to be more inclusive of “other” voices?" I believe they indicated that this paragraph is acceptable.
~They requested I re-order my research questions like this:
- How can I create a new technique/style of 21st Century abstraction that examines, expresses, and comments on issues of identity such as gender, sexuality, ethnicity, race in such a way that positively impacts issues of social equity?;
- How can I create 21st Century abstract paintings that pay homage to the proto-feminist tradition of abstract painting, comments on relevant-to-today issues in a way that positively impacts social, gender and racial/ethnic equities, and is personally invested?...
~They recommended that I re-phrase these questions as statements and to make them the core of my abstract.
~They asked me to add to the last paragraph of the abstract, "Methodologies used to analyze On Abstract Painting, Color & Otherness include intersectional approaches, i.e., formalism, iconography, Nochlinian feminist art history, autobiography, auto-ethnography, de Saussure’s structural linguistics, Derridian deconstruction, and Freudian based psychoanalysis."
"A thematic analysis of interviews assists in answering thesis questions and at drawing conclusions...",
~Mark suggested I conclude the abstract by answering: "How do you FEEL?"
~ He also stated that my literature review ought to be revised again, to include a female abstract painter (I.e., American ab ex-er Joan Mitchell).
~He stated that the order of the Confirmation of Registration reports be re-ordered as follows:
-Abstract
-Introduction
-Research questions
-Lit review
-Reference list
~He stated that the Summary with Work Plans report, and revised Additional Documents (i.e. appendices) are fine as they currently exist.
Agreed To Action Points (To Be Completed After The Meeting)
1. I will, as described above, revise Confirmation of Registration Reports again.
2. Mark and I will meet again on March 31. (We did, and Michael Bowdidge joined Mark and I for that meeting. MB made additional revision requests.)
3. After March 31st meeting, if approved, I will resubmit all reports.
