Jan 2023-TT Session 23

TT OPEN WINDOWS TALK
THE INFRASTRUCTURES OF THE EXHIBITIONARY/CURATORIAL
WITH CAROLINA RITO

In her public talk, Dr Carolina Rito discussed:
1.	The curatorial extending beyond the exhibition
2.	The curation as a mode of cultural event (planning and form), i.e., exhibit, talk, publication, etc.
3.	The nature of the inquiry being central (to any mode of curation)

EXPLORING THE ROLES OF WRITING IN PRACTICE RESEARCH
WITH CAROLINA RITO

During the follow-up workshop, Dr. Rito focused on the diversity of approaches to writing in artistic research, posing these questions to TT PhD students:

1.	What is the relationship between practice and writing in a PhD context?
2.	Is writing the opportunity to describe the practice?
3.	Is it the extension of practice via the means of writing?
4.	Is it a way to contextualize the PhD research within the conceptual and practice debates emerging from the practice?

The differences between methodology and method, as well as the relationship between the two, that is between writing (the academic application of methodology or critical analysis), and practice (the application of studio/creative research methods) were also discussed. Examples presented included creative practice-based PhD theses by Marie Fahlin, Anne Juren, and Paz Rojo.

CONFERENCE, WHY?: AND ON PREPARING, EDITING & PRESENTING
WITH MARC HERBST

The top three take-aways were:
1.	The required reading… Foucault’s “The Order of Things” Preface was great
2.	Discussion of imposter syndrome (defined as “Impostor syndrome, also known as impostor phenomenon or impostorism, is a psychological occurrence in which an individual doubts their skills, talents, or accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a fraud…”), the connection to Foucault’s writing, and artists being socially “othered”, othered within and outside of academia, and pretty much everywhere was evocative.
3.	The idea of workshopping a piece with a TT colleague was an excellent one.
(Note, for this 2.5-hour workshop, based on the title, plus what is outlined for the upcoming March TT Intensive, that is a Transart research symposium, an agenda that reads something like this may have been more productive:
0-30 minutes- Introductions
30-45 minutes- On google docs, write an 150-250 word abstract for the upcoming TT Intensive. Select "share editing" with anyone with this link. Copy that link.
45-70 minutes- Enter breakout room with a partner, then via chat, share the google docs link for each other’s abstract. Read, then discuss the proposed presentation ideas, work and/or traditional text-based "paper".
70-85 minutes- Take a break.
85-105 minutes- Return to breakout room and edit your partner's project/proposal abstract...again to approximately 200 words.
105 minutes-150 minutes- Return to main classroom, and everyone read/share your just edited abstract.
150 minutes- Say thank you and good-bye.)
