Discussion notes (researcher)
The discussion between Robyn Ferrell and myself, Gina Dominique, revolved around my recently submitted Confirmation of Registration reports, and the associated upcoming viva. (The viva was first scheduled for Feb. 9, and due to UK strikes was rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 20th. Hana Leaper will conduct it.)
Robyn prepared me by asking relevant-to-my-project questions. We agreed that I will attempt to remain calm and articulate my thesis proposal ideas (i.e., those outlined in my abstract), vs. reading directly from my reports. We discussed several other pointers...and we prepared "mini viva tips"...see below.
Agreed action points (to be completed after the meeting)
Mini Viva Tips- For my Feb. 20th review with Hana Leaper:
1. Talk through my abstract, but if I am too nervous, read directly.
2. I asked myself questions that I have needed to know the answer to for the last two or more decades. The main questions are:
3. Why abstract painting now…is it relevant today? (I reason that yes, it must be, as the history of (post-modern) abstract painting is just 120 years old, so relative to the 30,000+ year old history of painting and all of the formalized modern painting genres: portraiture, history painting, still life painting, landscape painting, genre painting, and abstract painting... it is relevant. And come to think of it, for the past century, it is about the only game in painting town :)
4. Why color? (At this moment, my answer is that color is, philosophically, theoretically and in terms of the physical act of painting, and in regards to the paintings themselves, the project's leading vehicle is color.)
5. The thesis itself arose from my applying art historical and analytical/theoretical frameworks, to my experience of painting, and directly to my current body of work, which is still evolving.
6. I am reasonably confident that my painting will be strong enough, (evidenced in the paintings completed to date, and the approach I have to ones that I intend to paint to complete the project); that my theoretical methods of analysis are relevant, (evidenced in my introduction, literature review, and 7 outlined essays), and that there is philosophical ground for me to stand (my project) on, (evidenced in my bibliography...especially in the phenomenology and feminist aesthetics approaches), so that I will be able to complete my praxis and thesis.
7. My question is, do my Confirmation of Registration reports and appendices convey this and convince you?
