Meeting notes and files-Discussion notes (researcher)
During our supervisory meeting, Borinquen and I first discussed my studio work, my preparations for my 2023 exhibition at Stevenson University Greenspring Gallery "the cube". We reviewed SU's "cube" gallery floor plan/wall elevations, and an interior pic of an installed exhibition. I discussed with her my ideas on painting 6 larger scaled mural-like "skin toned" paintings on linen, and possibly creating a cube-within-the cube sculpture. She noted the minimalist nature of this idea.
And she suggested I create (I'm thinking scale models) in my studio to get a sense if I really want or need sculpture in the show. Or else to create a digital mock-up, then cut and paste .jpgs to get a sense of the work in the space.
I reported to her that on Monday, I completed the 10th of my 10 artist interviews. She commented that having this data for my writing the dissertation/thesis is analogous to my having paint to apply to the canvas. It is my content.
She outlined the sections of my thesis/dissertation, and suggested I focus on writing PART I, the introduction, as outlined:
PART 1: INTRODUCTION
...State topic
...State what attracted me to this topic
...Pose research questions I asked
I.e. I’m going to answer these questions through various methodologies and methods
Print the interview transcripts and color code common themes
PART 2: METHODOLOGY
I will answer these questions through creative research methods that include these tools:
I.e., Intersectionality…formalism, iconography, feminism, Marxism, Autobiography/Biography, Semiology, Deconstruction, Psychoanalysis
PART 3: LITERATURE REVIEW
(Pre-) Summary will include:
a) Discussion of art history/schools that already exist (to contextualize what/who’s work influences me, female painters, etc.)
Methodology I'm using...i.e., Intersectionality,
b) philosophical position- Phenomenology, Philosophy of Color, Aesthetics, Feminist Aesthetics
PART 4: DATA ANALYSIS
Compare and contrast of information/points/themes revealed in the answers to questions I asked each artist I interviewed...
*Use quotes from interviewees to support the themes revealed
I.e. what I am saying about ____ is demonstrated by what ___ said
And is contracted by what _____ and ___ said.
I think I will also need PART 5: CONCLUSIONS
...with this research...Creating a disruption by _____ and/or
This is in line with or supports the historical trajectory by ______.
Agreed action points (to be completed after the meeting)
1. By December, in preparation of the next milestone, I will aim to write the first 5,000 words within my INTRODUCTION.
2. In my studio this winter, I will experiment with materials/medium to create one or more proportionally scaled sculptures to see if I want to also include in my 2023 Stevenson Univ. Greenspring gallery I will mount next summer.
3. I will print out the 10 artist interview transcripts and begin to highlight emerging themes.
